Pre-Installation Checklist

Automated fire features › before you install

Work through this before the gas goes in and before anything is poured. Every item here is inexpensive to get right now and expensive to correct later. Page references are to Automated Fire 101.

Gas

☐ Pipe sized for the distance to the furthest feature and the total gas load on that line (AF101 p.2)
☐ Gas pressure being supplied to the features confirmed (AF101 p.2)
☐ Ignition system label checked: configured for that gas pressure (AF101 p.2)
☐ Ignition system label checked: configured for that gas type (AF101 p.2)
☐ Key valve or gas ball valve installed within 6 ft of the feature (AF101 p.3)
☐ Valve sized correctly for the feature it serves (AF101 p.3)
☐ Natural gas: ventilation at the bottom of the bowl and vent holes in the pan (AF101 p.3–4)
☐ Propane: ventilation at the very BOTTOM of the feature, and no vent holes in the burner pan (AF101 p.3–4)
☐ New gas line purged of both air AND debris (AF101 p.5)
☐ Propane only: optional safety backup valve in the line feeding all features (AF101 p.5)
☐ Correct BRASS main burner orifice or air mixer received for the gas type and burner (AF101 p.5)

Electrical

☐ 12 AWG wire, solid or stranded, on every run
☐ 30 Volt DC systems: supply provides at least 60W per AWEIS (AF101 p.6)
☐ 24 Volt AC systems: transformer provides at least 50W per AWEIS and 35W per tiki torch (AF101 p.6)
☐ Two or more features on one pair of wire: polarity matched BETWEEN the features (AF101 p.6)

Any feature within 5 ft of a pool or spa

All three are required to pass inspection.

☐ AWEIS is the 30 Volt DC version
☐ 30 Volt DC power supply certified for use near swimming pools — available only through us
☐ Gas line bonded AT EACH fire feature running on 30 Volt DC

Tiki torches are not available in a 30 Volt DC version. Talk to us before specifying torches within 5 ft of water.

Fire bowls

☐ Fire ring or burner no closer than 6″ to the inside surface of the bowl
☐ Burner holes facing UP or SIDEWAYS — never down. Submersible burners are the exception; their holes face down
☐ Pilot burner at the OUTER edge of the burner, not in the interior
☐ Burner recessed no lower than 3″ from the top of the bowl (AF101 p.8)

Linear features

☐ Burner length measured
☐ 20 ft or under: one burner with one AWEIS and a single pilot burner
☐ Over 20 ft, natural gas: multiple inlets on burner, one AWEIS with a single pilot burner
☐ Over 14 ft, propane: multiple inlets on burner, one AWEIS with DUAL pilot burners strongly recommended (AF101 p.8)

Media

Only these are acceptable in a fire feature.

☐ Lava rock no larger than 2″ in diameter
☐ Fireglass, ½” in diameter or larger where an AWEIS is installed
☐ Media made from refractory material

Drainage

☐ Above ground: drain line installed, or drainage otherwise provided for
☐ At or below ground: “Waterproofed” AWEIS ordered
☐ At or below ground: marine grade burner ordered (AF101 p.9)
